About
Our Data Modeling and Database Programming Services
Our database
programming services have evolved over the past twenty years to
support the leaders in database technology: Oracle 8i/9i and Microsoft
SQL Server 2000 database systems.
Since
1982 our software engineers have specialized in database, data storage
and data warehousing technologies. As developers of one of the industries
first truly multi-user relational database management systems, built
from the ground up entirely in assembly Language, by 1992 our database
solutions were used by over 750,000 clients worldwide.
Utilizing
a low level language we obtained the highest programmatic control
over user security, performance and data integrity. Our database
solutions adhered to the relational data model based on the 1970
research papers by Dr. E.F. Codd, an IBM researcher. In 1985, Dr.
Codd published a list of 12 rules that concisely defined an ideal
relational database, which have provided a guideline for the design
of all relational database systems ever since including database
languages, query subsystems, database semantics, locking and recovery,
and inferential subsystems.
Oracle,
IBM, Microsoft and our own database management system are all based
on Dr. Codds' relational data model.

Database Management
Systems Services
Silicon Digital Systems, inc. has its roots in database
management systems. A rare consulting company that has worked on
database systems from the ground up and from the inside out. Our
Oracle and SQL Server DBA's and database programmers are skilled
IT professionals with experience gained on the front-lines of serious
production database installations. When your project can't afford
"on-the-job-training" you deserve a seasoned database
specialist. Contact us, we can help.
Database Skills
Data modeling and
Data normalization
From a logical model of your information requirements and business
rules that define your database to a physical model optimized for
the specific characteristics of your target database, our data modelers
help you visually determine the proper structure, key elements and
optimal design for your database. Our data modeling tools include
CAs' AllFusion ERwin Data Modeler, IBMs' Rational Rose Professional
Data Modeler, Microsofts' Visual Studio .NET 2003 Enterprise Architect
(VSEA) and Oracles' Oracle9i Designer.
- Database tuning, Database optimization,
Database configuration
- On-call DBA support for Oracle
8i/9i and Microsoft SQL Server
- Database Backup and Disaster
Recovery
- Database Security
- Data Migration (PeopleSoft, Baan,
SAP, JD Edwards)
- Database programming (Functions,
Stored Procedures, Triggers, PL/SQL, Transact-SQL)
Oracle 8i/9i
Our DBA's are Oracle experts familiar with performance
tuning parameters to the most optimal settings designed to substantially
increase performance. We use Oracles latest performance tuning
tool – STATSPACK. Historically, DBA's used the tuning utility
supplied by Oracle for the last several years, UTLBSTAT and UTLESTAT.
STATSPACK is a tuning utility that was introduced in release Oracle
8.1.6. STATSPACK has many new tuning features that are not available
when running UTLBSTAT/UTLESTAT. It collects more information,
pre-calculates some of the performance ratios, and stores performance
statistics in permanent tables so that you can reference historical
data. The statistics stored in the permanent Oracle tables, owned
by PERFSTAT, can be analyzed by running the STATSPACK report.
This report includes a summary page of high-resource SQL statements,
wait events and initialization parameters. Silicon Digital Systems
DBA's are trained in advanced techniques for solving even the
most demanding Oracle database performance problems.
Microsoft SQL Server
We provide SQL Server consulting services to analyze
the architectural fundamentals that affect tuning - I/O tuning
and RAID storage considerations. Our team specializes in tuning
hardware, database layout, and configuration parameters and provides
database design enhancements for increased ease-of-use, performance,
manageability, and reliability.
• SERVER TUNING Using the Microsoft Windows®
2000 System Monitor and the SQL Server Profiler to shorten transaction
response times.
• SIZING AND CAPACITY PLANNING
Modeling software and hardware usage to predict resource consumption
and conduct pre configuration planning, and performing what-if
scenarios about workload growth to avoid slow response times.
• CONFIGURING AND TUNING Tune
online transaction processing (OLTP) systems, data warehouses,
and replicated systems, and setting up your system for high-performance
backup and recovery.
• TUNING SQL STATEMENTS Getting
optimal performance by using Query Analyzer and Profiler to tune
SQL statements and stored procedures, taking advantage of indexes
and hints.
• SQL SERVER REPLICATION / SQL SERVER
CLUSTER
